Investments into the development and modernisation of railway infrastructure and transport means which enable faster goods and passenger transport have recently been increased. However, railway transport has not gained a more significant share of the European transport market as a consequence. Small and less developed countries cannot follow the demanding financial investments and focus mainly on optimisation of transport and infrastructural means which meet their immediate market needs. The emphasis of this paper is defining the railway transport technology as the main initiator of development and improvement.
By defining the railway transport technology, grounds are set for: overcoming difficulties created on other levels of the railway transport system, redefining the railway infrastructure technology and railway carrier technology and their coordination as well as for further development and improvement of the railway transport technology. In fact, as a result of railway transport technology development, the railway carrier is able to optimise its technical and human resources with the aim of reducing transport duration and costs by the optimal use of technical means and human resources.
Key words: railway transport technology, development, improvement
